Who Is DFINITY?
The DFINITY Foundation is the nonprofit research organization behind the Internet Computer — the people, the mission, and how the network is governed.
01The foundation behind ICP
DFINITY is a nonprofit foundation that funds and coordinates research and development on the Internet Computer. It does not own the network — the network is run by independent data centers and governed by the ICP community — but it is the primary steward of the protocol's research and roadmap.
02Governance and sovereignty
ICP is governed by the Network Nervous System (NNS), a decentralized autonomous organization where token holders vote on upgrades and protocol changes. That governance model is a concrete example of sovereignty: no single company decides what the network does. Apex's sovereignty thesis is about exactly this — who holds the power to change the system you depend on.
