What Is Chain Fusion?
Chain fusion is the Internet Computer's technology for connecting and interoperating with other blockchains — Bitcoin, Ethereum, and more — directly from smart contracts, without bridges or wrapped tokens.
01The big idea
Chain fusion lets canisters on the Internet Computer read from and write to other blockchains directly, without the bridges or wrapped tokens that most cross-chain systems rely on. Instead of moving assets through a third-party bridge, a canister can hold and transact with native Bitcoin or Ethereum directly, using the network's chain-key cryptography to sign transactions on those chains.
02How it works
The Internet Computer runs threshold-signature protocols that let it act as a single signer on other chains. Because no single node holds the private key, the network can produce valid signatures for Bitcoin and Ethereum transactions while remaining decentralized and tamper-resistant. That is what makes direct, bridge-free interoperability possible.
03Why it matters for Web3
Most cross-chain systems today route through bridges, which are frequent targets for hacks and add trust assumptions. Chain fusion removes those intermediaries, so value and data can move between chains with the same verifiable, self-custodial properties as the chains themselves. For Apex, this is interoperability done the sovereignty way: no gatekeeper, no wrapped-token middleman, just direct, verifiable connections between open networks.
