01On-chain AI execution in canisters

Canisters can run AI workloads directly on the network — inference, model serving, and agent logic — on replicated, verifiable infrastructure. Because execution is transparent and consensus-checked, an AI service can prove what it actually did rather than asking you to trust a black box. This is the foundation for AI you can audit and own, not just consume.

02Chain Fusion multi-chain interoperability

Chain Fusion lets canisters read from and write to other blockchains — Bitcoin, Ethereum, and more — directly, without bridges or wrapped tokens. Threshold signatures let the network act as a single signer on other chains while staying decentralized. For AI, this means agents can transact and coordinate across chains with the same verifiable, self-custodial properties as the chains themselves.

03vetKeys encryption

vetKeys provide verifiable, end-to-end encryption keys derived by the network without any single node seeing the plaintext. AI agents can encrypt and protect sensitive data — user context, private inputs, model weights — so that even the infrastructure running them cannot read it without authorization. Privacy and verifiability are combined rather than traded off.

04Internet Identity and verifiable credentials

Internet Identity gives users a single, anonymous, phishing-resistant way to authenticate across applications without passwords. Combined with verifiable credentials, users can prove attributes about themselves — membership, age, authorization — without revealing unnecessary data. AI agents can authenticate users and gate actions on verifiable claims, giving agents a trustworthy identity layer.

05HTTPS outcalls

Canisters can make outgoing HTTPS requests to the open internet, letting AI agents fetch live data, call external APIs, and integrate with the wider web. Because outcalls are made from a canister, the request and its result are part of the verifiable, replicated execution — an agent's external interactions are auditable, not hidden inside a private server.

06The reverse gas model

On ICP, users do not pay per transaction. Instead, canisters hold cycles and pay for their own computation, and developers can sponsor usage. This reverse gas model removes the friction of paying for every AI call, so agents can run continuously and autonomously without a user approving each step — a prerequisite for always-on, self-directed AI.

07Timers

Canisters can schedule work with timers, waking up on a schedule to run tasks without a user triggering them. This lets AI agents operate autonomously over time — polling, reacting, and acting on their own — rather than only responding to direct requests. Combined with the reverse gas model, timers are what make self-governing, always-on agents possible.

08Sovereign self-governing AI agents

Taken together, these capabilities let AI agents run on open, community-governed infrastructure: verifiable execution, direct multi-chain access, end-to-end encryption, a trustworthy identity layer, live internet access, self-funded operation, and scheduled autonomy. That is the sovereignty thesis realized for AI — agents that are not owned or controlled by a single gatekeeper, but run on infrastructure the community governs. For Apex, this is the shape of an AI future worth building toward.
